Mike Franklin, Owner-Operator
Mike grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and came to Maryland in 1977 to attend St. John’s College in Annapolis. In 1986, he met Upper Marlboro native, Debra Gray, the two married in 1988, moving into their first home together on Gallatin Street in Hyattsville. Mike and Debbie immediately fell in love with the Hyattsville community, but realized the neighborhood was lacking in retail and dining options. When the long standing Hyattsville Hardware Co. closed in 1992, Mike, a 19 year veteran of the specialty toy industry, seized the opportunity and opened Franklins General Store & Deli. The store was an immediate success, helping to recapture the spirit of bustling community activity in downtown Hyattsville. In 2002, Mike expanded to include a 200 seat restaurant and brewery, the first microbrewery in Prince George’s County.
Living just three blocks from Franklins, Mike believes passionately in building community through all aspects of his life. Having lived in Hyattsville for 25 years, Mike has been an active volunteer in the Prince George’s County Public School System, where his two daughters progressed from kindergarten through grade twelve. Mike has served as president of the Hyattsville Preservation Association and Brewer’s Association of Maryland, and is currently chair of the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation. Mike and Debbie have raised their two daughters in Hyattsville, and continue to call it home.
Marc Heckrotte, Chef
Coming to Franklins in August of 2006 after a three year stint as chef at the Penn Wells Hotel in Wellsboro, PA, Marc Heckrotte brings with him a love for food, family and bacon, a sense of humor, a bit of saltiness, and old, ratty, Oriole swag. A Baltimore native, Marc is a “restaurant rat”, having first started in the industry as a 16 year old scooping ice cream at Friendly’s. A graduate of L’Academie de Cusine, he has worked at numerous Maryland and Washington, D.C. area restaurants, waiting tables, tending bar, plating desserts, making salads, manning the line, becoming a sous chef and ultimately a chef, finding a home here at Franklins
Mike Roy, Brewer
A New Hampsire native, Mike Roy joined the Franklins family in January 2010. He got his start in brewing at IncrediBREW (NH), followed by brewpub stints at Milly’s Tavern (NH) and Beer Works (MA). His beer philosophy blends a respect for tradition, an openness to experimentation, and most importantly his favorite brewery spice, variety. Away from the brewery he spends his time playing volleyball, watching classic films, and seeking out barbecue
