About Franklins

Roots that reach back...located in the heart of historic Hyattsville MD

The Franklins Story

Located in the heart of historic Hyattsville MD, Franklins is Prince Georges County’s first microbrewery, and the only combination restaurant, brewery, and toy store in the world. Franklins is a gathering place with deep roots in the Hyattsville community.

In 1992, Mike and Debra Franklin purchased the former Hyattsville Hardware Co, a Hyattsville institution located on a dying strip of route 1, and opened Franklins General Store & deli, helping to recapture the spirit of bustling community activity. The deli soon became a popular lunch spot, and eventually outgrew its limited space. In 2002, Franklins closed the deli portion of the store, and opened a 200 seat brewpub, and doubled the size of the store.

A Destination Point

Since its inception, Franklins has been a destination for local families and craft beer lovers alike. The food menu combines quality brewpub fare, together with a host of locally sourced seasonal specials. The store supplies the neighborhood with cool gifts, toys, wine, beer, candy, cards and much more.

Supporting Our Community

We Think Local is Good

As an independent, locally owned business, the idea of community is very important to us. From locally sourced food, to the art on the walls, to local products in the store, we are proud to be a key part of the revitalization and growth of our local community.

Yep – Fresh and Local Ingredients

We source our food locally whenever possible. It is our philosophy that choosing fresh, local ingredients benefits both our guests and our community. Whether it is a dry aged burger from Baltimore County, or a tomato grown in Prince George’s County, our customers get to enjoy the freshness and vitality that seasonal food at its peak can bring, while also supporting the local hardworking people who provide us with such food.

Kinetic Light Mural

Located on the side of the building coming north on RT 1, Franklins is home to 40’ x 14’ kinetic light mural. The piece, “After Dark, Hyattsville” by Boston artist Liz Manicatide is a first of its kind anywhere, permanent outdoor installation, which uses color changing LED lights to provide a captivating light show after dark. With its vibrant colors and dream-like imagery, the piece adds an eye catching sense of whimsy to the route one corridor. View the mural.
